Hyrum Sunnex knows his religion has stood in the way of his sport but the Fairfield College student is sticking with the choice he's made.

The 18-year-old is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and does not play sport on Sundays.

He has missed numerous games and trials and it has affected his chances of making national sides. "I know it's counted against me but I'm happy with the decision I've made."

Sunnex has excelled at almost every sport he has tried, including tennis, cricket, basketball and volleyball. But his real love is rugby league.

This year he was Jaradites' under-18 player of the year, played centre for Waikato under-18, and captained the Fairfield College team which won the Waikato one-day tournament.

After missing out on the Kiwi under-18 team this year Sunnex said his big chance would come early next year when his Waikato secondary schools team play the Auckland Warriors development team. The seventh former knows a good performance in that match would help him towards a place in the under-19 Kiwi team to tour Great Britain in 1997.

Waikato Rugby League development officer Rihari Kara said Sunnex had great leadership qualities and had every chance of making the under-19 Kiwis.

Sunnex wants to play professional rugby league for either the Warriors or in England but at the moment his focus is on a new-found sport — American football.

The Hamilton Hawks outside linebacker is enjoying his first season of American football and he hopes to travel to the US with the Hawks next year.

Sunnex is committed to a two-year Latter-Day Saints mission when he turns 19. The choice between religion and rugby league will be even more difficult if he makes the under-19 Kiwis squad.

HARD HAWK: All-round sportsman Hyrum Sunnex loves the big hits in American football, but rugby league is where his future lies.

17.08.1996: Taniwharau Top All Tables

Taniwharau have topped the tables in all four Waikato Rugby League qualifying competitions — premier, premier reserve, under-18 and under-16.

The Huntly club have therefore earned the advantage of needing to win only one match at each level in order to qualify for the grand f inals next month.

Jaradites are the others to have qualified in all four grades and Turangawaewae have made it in the top three competitions.

Play-of fs in all grades start next Saturday. Most matches in the first series will be at Resthills Park. Ngaruawahia's League Park will host two — Turangawaewae v Jaradites under-18s and Ngaruawahia v Hillcrest Hornets under-16s.

Play-off teams in order of qualifying:

Premier: Taniwharau, Turangawaewae, Hukanui, Jaradites, Victoria Tavern Tigers. Premier reserves: Taniwharau, Turangawaewae, Tigers, Jaradites, Hukanui. Under-18: Taniwharau, Turangawaewae, Hillcrest Hornets, Frankton Albion, Jaradites. Under-16: Taniwharau, Ngaruawahia, Hillcrest, Frankton, Jaradites.

Taniwharau suffered its first loss of the season in Waikato premier rugby league on Saturday as the day's two big matches both produced upsets.

The weather played a big part in the main match at Trust Bank Park where Jaradites beat Taniwharau 17-16 in the curtain-raiser to the Lion Red Cup clash between Waikato Cougars and North Harbour Sea Eagles.

In the other surprise of the day Victoria Tavern Tigers downed Turangawaewae 22-20 at Paterson Park, Ngaruawahia.

Taniwharau's Jamie Muru provided all his team's first-half points with two tries and two conversions, but the scores were locked up at 12-12 at half time, Jaradites ' points coming from three unconverted tries.

Artie Dimitrov, John Hedges (after a good solo run by winger James Medland) and Terry Mau produced the Jaradites ' scores, but goal-kicker Aisaki Garrisau failed with all his attempts during the match.

The second half started with a Basil Morgan drop goal to end the deadlock and put Jaradites back in front, but Taniwharau struck back when Corbum Tupaea set Te Arawa Maipi up for the Huntly-based team's third try and a 16-13 lead.

Medland provided Jaradites with the winning try four minutes from full time.

In other matches Hukanui reclaimed second position on the points table with its 28-8 win over

Hillcrest, Frankton Albion remain sixth after their 24-4 win over Ngaruawahia and Waipa move up and leave Hillcrest on the bottom with their 20-14 victory over Huntly South.

The most attractive Waikato premier club rugby league match tomorrow will again provide the curtain-raiser to a national championship match in Hamilton.

Unbeaten Taniwharau will meet Jaradites in the 1pm game at Trust Bank Park, which precedes the Lion Red Cup game between Waikato Cougars and North Harbour.

Taniwharau, which has just named its annual tertiary education scholarships in memory of former club president Te Ron Nathan who died suddenly at the same park a fortnight ago, leads the competition early in the second round and is having its most consistently successful season for years.

Jaradites will go into the match as underdogs, as do all Taniwharau's opponents these days. Nonetheless, it is comfortably the most successful of the clubs newly promoted this season and still well in the hunt for a play-off spot.

Waipa Wildcats had their first premier success over Ngaruawahia last Saturday and will try to repeat the dose in another home game at Kihikihi Domain tomorrow, this time against Huntly South.

There are two matches at Ngaruawahia — Turangawaewae v Victoria Tavern Tigers at Paterson Park and Ngaruawahia v Frankton Albion at League Park.

The sole Resthills Park fixture is a local derby, in which second-placed Hukanui will try to put last weekend's reverse against Frankton behind it when it plays Hillcrest Hornets.
